Prague auctions may not reach the reputation of Sotheby's or Christie's but millions of crowns are being paid for art here. The word "auction" is derived from the Latin augere, which means "to increase" or "augment". Auctions have a long history, having been recorded as early as 500 B.C. According to Herodotus, in Babylon auctions of women for marriage were held annually. Have a look at paintings that were sold at Prague auctions for the 15 highest prices (in CZK).
